  1. If I take advantage of the Wild Hog Hunting package, are there any hidden fees, and are there guides available?
All of the packages at Wilderness Calls are complete, with no hidden fees. The cost of the packages covers your entire stay at Wilderness Calls. The Wild Hog Hunting package is $700.00 per guest. This covers lunch, dinner and bedding. There will also be soft drinks and snacks available, when the guests are not hunting. We do suggest that a guest bring their own personal hygiene knick knacks, tooth brush, comb, deodorant, etc.,(soap and shampoo is available). If a guest wished to have a special soap or shampoo they would need to bring these items also. Wilderness Calls is located in the wilderness, so take that into consideration if you have any special medication needs. As far as alcohol is concerned, we do have an open bar, but we also have a policy that covers rowdy drunkenness. The two rules that would mean eviction without refund from the property would be rowdy drunkenness and hunting while consuming alcohol. NO ! Not even one drink is permitted during the noon hour if you are hunting!!!!!!!! The safety of our guests is very important to the staff at Wilderness Calls. All of the hunting packages start on Thursday at 3:00 PM. This gives each guest a chance to familiarize themselves with the hunting area. The staff will assist the guest in their hunting adventure. Guides are available during the hunt and will assist the guest in any way possible. We believe in letting the guest hunt, but if they need assistance in the hunt, the guides at Wilderness Calls are more than happy to help. Trail cameras are constantly placed on the property to assist the guides and you for a successful hunting adventure at Wilderness Calls also. Thank you Sam

  2. Does the Wilderness Calls Wild Hog Call really work?
Wow! Does the Wilderness Calls, Hog Call work? Now the Wise Old Redneck Guru would tell you to just use sour corn or fish heads, but that can be unpleasant to the nose. I will admit I was a bit skeptical when we decided to introduce such a call. Then I remembered many years ago, when I first was introduced to a deer grunter, thinking at the time, "no deer is going to come to this noise". Was I ever wrong! The deer grunter has proven to be very effective. I did have the opportunity to use the Wilderness Calls Hog Call this past hunting season and was fortunate enough to harvest two large wild hogs with it, in one weekend. To my amazement I did not even have to use corn of any kind to complete the task. I will advise you that the wild hog call takes some practice to use effectively. I have found that any call you use to hunt with, deer, duck or turkey, takes practice. The Wilderness Calls wild hog call is no different. Once perfected it is highly effective though! There is no better feeling than to know you called a large wild boar into your stand, as he crashes through the bushes. I guess the response to your question is, yes the Wilderness Calls wild hog call works. I have personally field tested it with success. Go forth and hog hunt! Sam

  3. How accurate is a marlin 17hmr?
I couldn't say without looking at the specific rifle, but the 17 HMR is known for its accuracy and power (relative to its size, of course). It's basically a 22 magnum that's been necked down to .17 caliber. Obviously, the bullet is proportionally smaller in mass. The smaller mass with the 22 magnum ignition pressure gives the projectile a significantly higher muzzle velocity. And, as you know, velocity squared is very important when the projectile hits the target. If the rifle looks good it probably is and will probably shoot good. Many manufacturers make the .17 HMR but Marlin is known for its value -- good quality for reasonable prices. If you are thinking about buying one, please know that the 17 HMR ammo is pretty expensive relative to .22 ammo. If I was going to do some general plinking I would stay with the .22 long rifle cartridge. You can buy it just about anywhere and it's seldom more than 5 or 6 cents a round. It's hard to shoot much cheaper than that nowadays. Wilderness Calls Armor

  4. How do you fish for Flounder?
Hey Mr. Jones that is a good question! Flounder are one of the best tasting fish in the ocean. Flounder love to stay on the sandy bottom, with their color scheme it makes it easier for them to blend in so they can catch their prey. When I go flounder fishing I hunt for a nice sandy spot surrounded by wide bladed grass. You can use just about anything such as shrimp, cut bait, and even artificial bait. I like to use dead shrimp and white gulp shrimp. Some people like to go out at dark with a light and a gig. This works fine too! Find some sand bottom and shine your light around. I use above and underwater lights to fish at night for flounder. Sometimes they are hard to see. When you get into a lot of flounder it can be a lot of fun. The next time you go out fishing good luck and remember a bad day of fishing is better than a good day at work anytime! Samuel Jr. Saltwater Fishing Pro

  5. What makes your doe-n-heat estrous better than any other?
We have been asked this question several times over the past few months. The Wise Old Redneck Guru would simply say because he has his name on it. As hunters we all know this is not enough. When we decided to market an estrous, we first had to decide what we felt was the most effective. The guides at Wilderness Calls (Little Samuel and myself) in combination with several other hunters have used almost every estrous on the market, through out the years. We will be the first to admit some were better than others, but none had that scent we were searching for. It was as if they all tried to add something or take something out to make their estrous the best, or maybe it was because we just did not see it working. Now we could go on and on about how much research and testing we put into the estrous, but I am sure you do not want to be bored with all that. We were meditating by the camp fire one evening and came up with the concept that would work. A doe-n-heat estrous that was uncut with nothing added to it, pure estrous. What a concept! No estrous will be sold by Wilderness Calls that is over 6 months old, or past January 31 of each year. Each year we will replenish our supply with new fresh estrous. To prove we had hit on what the Redneck Guru calls his certified estrous, we placed it on the Redneck Guru applicators and set up trail cams to see if the bucks would indeed come to it. On the estrous page you can see the many bucks attracted to the estrous, from Sarasota, Florida to Wilderness Calls in Stewart County, Georgia, a picture is worth a thousand words. We are not claiming we have the best estrous but we have provided photographic evidence of our estrous. Have you seen any from the competitors? Sam

  6. What is your favorite weapon to use hunting?
I am an avid hunter, so this question would depend on the time of year and what I am hunting. It is hard to pick one weapon over another, when it comes to hunting. I enjoy bow hunting, it gives me a chance to observe deer and hogs much closer, before I have the opportunity to harvest them. My Redhead, Toxic bow is very accurate and I do enjoy the skill and practice it takes to become consistent with it. As long as I hit the target, the arrows can be used over and over again. I will spend many hours practicing for that opportunity to harvest a deer or hog with my bow. When I am hunting small game; squirrels, dove, quail and turkey, I prefer my automatic 12 gauge shotgun. I find it hard to hit the little critters with a rifle and for now using a bow is out of the question. I will admit that for big game my 308 Remington, bolt action rifle with a scope is my favorite. Unlike the bow, my movement in the stand is minimum, giving me a greater opportunity to harvest a large hog or buck. When I graduated to still hunting, I soon realized the importance of a good scope. In response to your question, I would have to say the 308 rifle is my favorite, but not by much. Sam Sr

  7. What is your stance on women hunters?
I welcome and encourage female hunters. The number of female hunters is increasing, as they discover the great sport of hunting. This gives a positive outlook on the future for the sport of hunting. Not only does it increase the number of people that enjoy nature and the solitude of our great outdoors, it makes hunting a sport the whole family can enjoy. When this happens, the children of hunters, more then likely will grow up to be hunters. This will keep the sport I love and enjoy alive into the future. At Wilderness Calls we are a family oriented web site and business and encourage females as well as males to join our family. Happy Hunting! Sam Though I have never hunted in my life, I think women hunters are awesome and we fully support and welcome them as members and participants on our site and in our business! Earlier this year we participated in advertising in Women Hunters magazine. Since starting in this business I have met many lovely women who hunt. The sisters who operate and own "High Maintenance Camo" are an example of women who have hunted since they were children and love the sport. Their own product not only is appealing to women but features items for the woman hunter. Designed and created for a woman's needs. Women are definitely becoming a part of the hunting as we see many women like Brenda Valentine, go from hairdresser to hunting celebrity due to her skills. I enjoy watching women hunt on the various shows and listening to their excitement about the sport! They actually make me consider trying the sport. City Girl.

  8. Can nature lovers and hunters co-exist?
This is a subject that helped create Wilderness Calls. James, the conservationist and I, the hunter, joined to create a place where both would co-exist. James loves animals and nature with a passion that is equal to my passion for hunting and nature. We respect each others beliefs and strive to make Wilderness Calls a hunters dream and a place where people can enjoy nature in its truest form, a paradise for both the hunter and the nature lover. We have an agreement, I will not ask him to harvest a deer or hog, as long as he does not ask me to pet a snake. There is no question in my mind that a hunter and a nature lover can co-exist, we are living proof. Sam

  9. I want to fish but I burn quickly in the sun, any suggestions on how to be comfortable, have fun and not burn?
Hey fellow reader this is Sam jr the saltwater pro. It is no question the sun can be unforgiving. But their is a lot you can do to keep from burning up while fishing. You can start by geting some spf 50 sun block, a light weight long sleeve shirt,a fishing hat with sides and a back bill, and if you have a boat you can get a canopy to keep the sun off of you while you fish. All of these tips will help keep you from getting burnt while having fun in the sun. Good luck and have fun on your next fishing trip! Samuel

  10. Samuel Jr. what do you think about the situation with the red snapper on the east coast?
Hello fellow readers this is salt water pro Samuel Kight JR. we have a problem with the red snapper band on the Georgia coast. Through my experience I have found that quotas on fish are a good thing but to ban something forever is not fair! Just like on the Florida coast, we have restrictions on red fish, grouper, trout and many other fish so that the fish are not over harvested. Some people don't know how to stop when there is no set limit. I think a month or two when the red snapper is spawning should be closed to fishermen but not 180 days. I find that is a little extreme! 12. Is feeding the animals considered fair when you hunt them?
Hailey that is a very good question and I am sure a lot of people have asked themselves the same thing. A lot of people that are unfamiliar with deer management and hunting would feel it is a disadvantage to the deer. We do have several areas on Wilderness Calls designed as a food source for wildlife. We have improved our deer herd tremendously in the past five years, through sound management in many areas and through our ongoing feeding and selective harvesting programs that we have established. All of these management techniques have aided in this area. The feeders are filled year round with nutritious feed, mixed with protein and supplements. We have improved our foot plots to add much needed protein to the diets of the deer and other wildlife. The feeding habits of a deer consist of browsing for food. The deer will not stay in one spot for a long period of time and eat. The deer will visit several different areas as they are feeding and will consume a variety of different food. The wildlife will stay in an area where food is available, so in a way this will keep deer in the area where we will hunt in the fall. In this way deer are a lot like humans, you would not go to a hardware store to get a three course meal, this would be counter productive. We do harvest some of the deer and hogs each year at Wilderness Calls. The food source we provide for the deer, will keep the deer in the area, but is not designed to bait the deer. We feel that having a food source year round, in several different areas, gives the wildlife many different areas to visit. You still have to hunt the area the deer or hogs will be in, therefore it is still a sport to find and harvest a deer or hog. At Wilderness Calls no animal is harvested and left on the ground. We pride ourselves in the rule; if you are going to shoot it you are going to consume it. If we do harvest a deer or hog you can be assured someone will process it and consume it. Sam

  13. Sam Jr I noticed in your fishing pictures you wear a pair of checkered shorts alot. Are they your "good luck" pair?
Sherry, I am a superstitious person when it comes to things like black cats and open knives, but when it comes to hunting and fishing I am not superstitious it was just a coincidence that I had them on but they are my favorite pair of shorts. That was a very observent question thanks and hope you enjoy our site! Samuel

  14. Are clay roads really hard to drive when it rains?
Let me start by saying "it is not impossible to drive on wet clay"! I will tell you that driving on wet clay is a unique and challenging adventure. The slightest miscalculation can mean disaster, or at the very, least a long walk to get help. Clay is a fine granular substance and when dry it is as hard as a rock, but when wet it will almost flow like volcano lava. It becomes very sticky when water is added to it. The combination of being sticky and loose makes it an unstable surface when wet. Vehicle tires are designed with treads to allow water to travel through and give the tire better traction. Wet clay will rapidly fill the treads and make the tire a solid round blob. The tire then acts like a sled, instead of a useful part of the vehicle. When this happens you will have little control over where the vehicle decides to travel. Rapid acceleration will clear the drive tires of a vehicle, but does little to help the other two tires. My advice to anyone that is going to attempt traveling on wet clay is "DON'T", unless you really have to do so. Sam
