Places of Interest and Languauge at Wilderness Calls
2nd Floor Door:
Was originally constructed for a future deck on the cabin. It has been used to observe wildlife at night with a spotlight or cool the cabin off in the summer.
8 Point Food Plot:
Located at the NorthEast corner of Wilderness Calls. It is a half acre food plot and was named after the location where VP James, harvested an 8 point buck the first year we bought Wilderness Calls.
Ain't:
Means No! Normally used as a double negative "I ain't got none" Can also refer to a relative such as your father or mother's sister; Aint Thelma.
Backstrap:
The section of meat on an animal such as a deer or hog; it runs along the backbone on each side, more commonly known as pork chops and in vension , this is the second best part of the deer.
Beard:
A piece of hair under a male turkey's neck that determines how long he has survived in the wilderness. The longer the beard usually indicates the longer age of the turkey
Beaver Dam Feeder:
A tripod feeder located in the Southwest corner of the property, just northwest of the Beaver Dam.
Bill's Food Plot:
This is Southwest corner of the property, it is about a quarter acre , where Bill placed a stand , so we assisted him in his hunting endeavors, by constructing a food plot near his stand.
Black Whatever Day We Leave:
If you have the opportunity to visit , you will know this day well. It is whatever day we leave to depart back to our perspective city lives, so depending on your trip, this could fall on any day of the week.
Boar:
Male hog which has not been castrated.
Buck:
A Male deer which has reached the maturity to grow antlers and breed.
Busted:
When the hunter is spotted by the prey he is pursuing. A deer will sometimes stomp their feet and then run. This is the moment the hunter concedes he or she has failed.
Cabin Pets:
The natural little animals that take up residence when we are not there and protect the cabin. There only seems to be a conflict when a Sheba visits.
Camp Feeder:
A trough feeder located in the southwest corner of the camp food plot. Same rule applies to this feeder as it applies to camp food plot.
Camp Food Plot:
A half acre food plot located approximately 200 hundred yards to the east of the camp. There is no harvesting of animals in this area and NO exceptions to the rule!
Campfire:
An open fire built every evening at the camp after a hard day's work or hunting. All crisis are discussed and resolved for the world as well as a host of tall tales shared.
Caping:
When a hunter is going to have the trophy he harvested mounted and when skinning the deer the hide will be cut from just below the front shoulders to the head, so the hide can be used for mounting. (At Wilderness Calls, if you shoot it, then it is your trophy and you will mount it!)
Climber:
A piece of deer hunting equipment used to climb trees without limbs. It consists of two pieces, one controlled by your hands and one controlled by your feet.
Crapper House:
An 8 X 12 foot building located between the cabin and generator shed. A modern bathroom, equipped with all the comforts of home ; shower,toilet, chick lights, marble sink and oh ya! Hot Water!
Critters:
A group of animals located in the wild or as a pest in the cabin. They may be one or more species together.
Cull Buck:
A Male deer that has less then desirable antlers, usually indicating bad blood line (possible inbreeding) or a very old buck past his reproductive prime.
Deer:
Four legged mammal that exists in the wilderness, with mature males having antlers.
Doe:
A Female deer once she has reached matuity to breed.
Farewell Traditional Ride:
This is the saddest scooter ride we take at Wilderness Calls. We take this ride to review the property one last time before we pull away down the road back to the city.
Fawn:
A female or male deer, newly born and sporting spots.
Feeder:
A structure used to feed the wildlife. It can be a spin feeder, which feeds at a set time or one that uses gravity to dispense food. At Wildrness Calls, we have three spin feeders which dispense food twice a day by a timer and two trough feeders that drop food by gravity as the food is consumed.
Feed time:
This time is controlled by moon phases and position. If the moon is straight up or down, rising or falling, the animals will feed. If the moon is visible or invisible the animals will still feed and tend to be more active when the moon is in these four positions. Many hunters will plan their hunting trips around the moon cycles.
Firepit:
Is a hole in the ground where the camp fire is built. It is located about 20 yards from the cabin. There are rocks placed around the pit to keep the fire in and the tall tales out.
Food Plot:
A portion of land that is cultivated and vegetation is planted to assist the wildlife to have a plentiful and nutritious food source.
Generator Shed:
A 16 X 24 foot shed located southwest of the cabin , constructed of metal with a concrete floor to house the generator for Wildeness Calls.
Ghett0:
This is a nature observatory constructed the same as the Hilton. The original construction was of scrap lumber and tin and when it was constructed it looked "ghetto". The name stuck even though it is revised and a lot nicer today.
Ghetto Food Plot:
This is a half acre food plot located just northwest of the gully food plot. It is one of the first food plots and has proven productive. It is named after the observatory located at the west end of this food plot.
Goin to Town:
This is when we leave Wilderness Calls and visit Cuthbert or Lumpkin. This is a treat to go enjoy the luxury of town.
Gonna:
Is used with do, such as "gonna do that" This statement means there is no set time to do anything but assures the listener that at some point in the future this task will be completed.
Gray Whatever Day Before Leaving Camp:
This day falls the day before Black Day, so it is the last day of our trip before returning to city life.(This day goes by the fastest! )
Gilt :
This is a young female pig until she is old enough to reproduce (8-18 months age) and has produced a litter.
Gully Food Plot:
A small food plot located in the center of the property , and you guessed it, in a deep gully. This is our newest food plot. This food plot has been surrounded by Saw Tooth Oak Trees we planted.
Heater:
A device used in the winter to keep warm. We call the heater "Big Bertha".
Hilton:
A 4 X 6 foot observatory (shooting house) with a recliner chair inside. It is located at the east end of the 8 point food plot and sports windows all the way around for comfortable nature observation.
Honey Hole:
This is a place where bucks congregate. Every hunter has that spot, where for some unknown reason deer will always visit. No one knows why the deer visit this spot regularly and no one will share this spot they know about while around the camp fire.
Hunting Gods:
These are the gods that oversee hunters and like Greek mythology one does not want to upset them before hunting.
Hunting Ground Blind:
A hunting ground blind is located on the ground, that can be constructed of bushes or material that is camouflaged . This hunting ground blind is used where trees are not tall enough to climb or a lock on stand can't be used and also where the forest may not be thick.
Locals:
Residents who live in the area and you will find they are a close knit clan in which it takes time to be accepted in if you were not born in the area.
Old Cabin:
This is a cabin on the east side of the property that appears to be hundreds of years old. This structure was present when we purchased Wilderness Calls.
Marriott:
A very massive nature observatory located at the end of Bill's food plot. It is 6 X 8 feet ,which hosts a leather recliner, tinted windows, and is a big favorite with the hunters as we are very proud of this building construction. The animals like it also, for they feel more safe as the hunter sleeps in the nice chair.
Muzzle Season:
During hunting season a period where primitive weapons are used to hunt, requiring the gun to be loaded with powder, bullet and cap manually. This season occurs between archery and general gun season.
Mystery Meat:
This is beef,venison and pork all combined together into patties. The mixture is never the same or equal combination and some people assume that it may actually be a combination of road kill.
Nubbin Buck:
This is a yearling buck before he is mature enough to grow antlers. The name comes from the nubs on his forehead, which someday will be antlers.
Persimmon Tree:
This tree bears the persimmon fruit. The fruit appears green before it is ripe and is not suitable for consumption by animal or human. When green, the fruit is bitter and a human will most certainly pucker their lips like they desire to kiss! When it ripens and changes color to a bright red it is much more tasty.
Porch:
This is a structure on the front of Wilderness Calls and this is where 90% of the socialization is done.
Processor:
An individual whose profession is to clean game and also packages the meat for the hunter.
Redneck:
An uneducated farm boy that plowed the fields with a mule all day, causing the back of his neck to be sunburned and red. He put aside his education with books but gained great knowledge about survival and the great outdoors.
Refreshment Cupboard:
This is one of the most important pieces of furniture in the cabin. It houses all alcoholic beverages at Wilderness Calls. Each visit a different kind of bottle is purchased and added to the cupboard. After five years and a visit at least once a month just use your imagination as to it's content!
Road Kill:
Tasty animals lying near or on the road. If not flattened too much and still warm, they are good in chili, soup, and of course the world famous mystery meat! (We are kidding!)
Rub:
Where the bark on a tree or bush is rubbbed off by a Male deer. This assists the buck to remove the velvet from his antlers after the summer growth.
Rut:
When the weather changes and bucks become sexually active as the glands in their necks swell.
Scooter:
This is what we call our 4 wheelers or ATVs at Wilderness Calls.
Scrape or Paw:
An area under a low hanging branch that a Male deer will mark by pawing the ground, in hopes that a doe will come along and leave her scent. This is part of the mating ritual.
Selina Food Plot:
This is a quarter acre food plot located at the northwest end of the property . It is fondly named after the CEO's daughter who helped clear this area.
Shebas:
This is the name given to our female visitors. It is simply a nickname.
Sling Blade:
A blade with a handle that can be swung back and forth to cut small vegetation.This is City Girl's favorite tool. (NOT!)
Smoke House:
In early America before the invention of freezers, this structure was used to cure meat for the winter. It was a building constructed of wood and had a dirt floor without insulation or windows. The meat is hung by the rafters and smoked till it is cured.
Spike:
A male deer with one or two antlers that do not have points. The antlers appear to be straight with some curve. It may be a young buck or an older buck that has passed his prime.
Stairs To the Loft:
A homemade ladder used to ascend to the sleeping area in the cabin.
Striking Paper:
This is a small amount of toilet paper one takes with them into the wilderness. Then when nature calls and there is no toilet in site, one can strike out to the scrubs or bushes, and then clean up after anwering Nature's call.
Sweet Baby/Babies:
Refers to all critters that hang around the cabin or camp area. Often this is used as a term of endearment for all animals between the staff at Wilderness Calls.
Tag:
Some state laws require hunters to tag a deer they have harvested. This tag is dated and is placed on the ear of the deer.
Tree Food Plot:
This food plot is about a quarter acre and located at the east central side of the property. This is so named as there is a large oak tree located in the center , which provides acorns for the winter months.
Tripod Feeder:
This is our first feeder on the proerty and has a tripod observatory. This location is very helpful for rookies to observe hog and deer.
Y'all:
Is more than one person or can be referring to a group of people.
Ya:
Means yes.
Yearling:
Either sex of the deer, once the spots are gone from their coat but they have not reached maturity yet.
Yonder:
A place that only the communicator knows the true location of but assumes everyone else knows too.
