It was the last week of December and the first of a new year. I had the pleasure to spend several quality days with Little Samuel, even though he harvested old "Spread Nasty". The new year was officially here now and it was my last evening to hunt, before I had to return to civilization. I had been hunting where the trail cameras had taken pictures of wildlife all week, with little luck. I decided to try the Selina food plot for my last hunt. The oaks that were planted in the early fall had been eaten down, so I figured it would be a good spot to start the new year. Something had to be eating the oaks! It was a clear cold evening when I climbed into a climber stand at the north side of the Selina food plot. I settled into the stand about three hours before dark. It was a peaceful afternoon, slight breeze and all the little critters were scurrying around in search of food. At this point I was extremely content to observe nature in its purest form. The little critters did not know I was in the area and this made the wait enjoyable to say the least. Then about thirty minutes before dark, I heard a couple of squirrels barking as if they were in distress, about 200 yards west of me. A wise older hunter had advised me that when I heard squirrels barking in the woods, it meant that something had frightened the little critters. It was not long before I heard something in the woods west of the food plot. At first I thought it was one of the little aggravating armadillos in search of food, before I heard a hog grunt. Then six wild hogs burst into the food plot as if they had a mission and the food plot was their final destination. They all were approximately 80 pounds and appeared to be in great shape. Now all I had to do was figure out which one I wanted to harvest. As I was doing that, a larger wild hog entered the food plot and the decision was much easier for me to determine which wild hog to harvest. Bigger is better! I took aim and another successful wild hog hunt was in the books at Wilderness Calls. It was a great week at Wilderness Calls and I had started the new year out in the best way I know!
